Diet and lifestyle changes (for example, smoking cessation, eating at least
three hours before lying down, a lower-fat diet) can benefit patients’ overall
health and well-being. Many primary care physicians recommend these changes
because of the benefit to patients’ overall health.1
However, there is little evidence supporting the effectiveness of lifestyle
changes when it comes to treating GERD symptoms, such as heartburn.1
You also may want to schedule regular checkups just in case the GERD increases
in severity or causes Barrett’s esophagus.
